Vocational Education in a College Setting We have had the opportunity to visit a unique program at the New York Institute of Technology campus in Central Islip, Long Island. Founded in 1987 by a team of experienced special educators and administrators, the Vocational Independence Program provides a three year course of study to equip students with significant learning disabilities for independent living and working. Students in the program participate fully in campus life, while living in a dormitory staffed with trained professionals who are on duty evenings and weekends. Third year students live in an apartment setting on campus to further expand their independent skills.
