Learning and school issues often involve three distinct fields of expertise: medicine, law and education. We believe that only by having some basic knowledge about how all three fields impact the experiences of children and their families, can physicians be fully equipped to help their patients and their patients’ families navigate the world of learning differences and special education.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued Policy Statements emphasizing the importance of psychosocial aspects of pediatric care and the role of the pediatrician in educational planning. Working on our own and with other organizations, such as the AAP, District II, we have worked to educate physicians about learning and school problems.

We have created a Pilot Curriculum designed to teach Pediatric Residents about learning and school issues. We presented a five-part version of this Pilot Curriculum at Bellevue Hospital/NYU Medical Center and a four-part version at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. We have also created a one session version of this Curriculum designed for medical students and presented it at the New York University School of Medicine. There are no current plans to present additional trainings for physicians. For more information about our Pilot Curriculum, including program outlines, please contact us.
