Our 2nd Life After High School Program, The College Conference (co-sponsored by F.E.G.S.), was held in Syosset, Long Island on Sunday, October 21, 2007.

Our Keynote Speaker, Christina Cacioppo Bertsch outlined what students and their families need to consider when selecting a college and how to handle issues such as disclosing a learning disability, self-advocacy, and dealing with a college’s office of disability services. Next, we heard from representatives from seven colleges with strong programs for students who learn differently: Mitchell College, the University of Arizona SALT Center, Farmingdale State College, Landmark College, Manhattanville College, Dowling College, and the New York Institute of Technology Vocational Independence Program.

The capacity crowd of students, parents and guidance counselors then had the opportunity to meet individually with Ms. Bertsch and the college representatives, to get more information and to ask specific questions.

See what the Conference attendees had to say about this program …

“This conference was truly wonderful! I loved that the programs were diversified and served different audiences and student profiles”

“It was much more than a college fair. It was wonderful to become aware of the programs”

 “It was an eye-opening experience”

“I thought this program was fantastic – very informative and motivational”

“Wow!”
